DSC 9425-WF

Director General Sharyn O'Neill presenting Fiona Yeats with 'Excellence in Public Education' Award

Bruce Rock District High School, 240 km from Perth, caters for 150 children from Kindergarten to Year 10. In 2012 Bruce Rock DHS received an 'Excellence in Public Education Award' as a result of an exemplary practice review of their school, they are very proud of this achievement and are focused on maintaining excellence.

Excerpt from the Expert Review Group Report (ERG)

"
The learning environment at Bruce Rock District High School epitomises the characteristics of schools that achieve success consistently. The leadership team has established operational conditions that ensure staff focus on what matters most, with a balance of explicit teaching and ‘wrap around support’. The leaders contribute significantly to the school’s success by recognising their role in supporting the staff in their work. They have found a way to build and maintain staff satisfaction in the workplace through a shared understanding of the expectations and needs of the community they serve"

Congratulations to Quairading District High School

centenary

Quairading District High School Students infront of Centenary Sign

Quairading won a $30,000 Artist in Residence (AIR) Grant. This grant will go towards their digital artist creating stories around the Quairading District High School Centenary in 2013.

The AIR Grants Program is open to all WA public schools, clusters of public schools and teacher training institutions (ie. tertiary institution Schools of Education) in collaboration with professional artists, arts and cultural organisations.

AIR gives artists an opportunity to broaden their experiences and share their skills while providing students with greater access to the creative development process and encourage them to consider the arts when making future career choices. The program also creates opportunities for artists and teachers to work together and develop effective teaching methods and practices for the arts.

This event will be an integral part of our activities in the centenary celebrations. For more information please contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Jurien Bay DHS - State Finalist in VET Award

Jurien Bay VET Award2012 WA Vocational Education in Schools Excellence Award

The WA VET in Schools Excellence Award of the Year 2012 is sponsored by Apprenticeships
Australia. It is a highly sort after and prestigious award and the judging of applications
is very rigorous.

The judging panel has completed short listing applications and they were extremely impressed
with the standard of submissions. I am pleased to advise that Jurien Bay DHS is a
state finalist in the award. This is outstanding achievement and certainly pays due recognition
to the efforts we have made in secondary to ensure a vibrant, relevant and industry
connected VET program (Yr 10 – 12). The landscape of VET is extremely complex and the
planning over a number of years has been extensive. In 2009 we were also a state finalist,
and the FIRST DHS to be a state finalist in the long history of the awards.

Student Article Quairading DHS

The UNAA World Environment Day Awards ceremony in Melbourne was a great success for Western Australia last weekend. As a W.A. student I say we did exceptionally well with six awards going to W.A including Quairading District High School and South Fremantle Senior High School. Great congratulations to all the finalists and winners throughout Australia especially Quairading DHS, I am a student from Quairading D.H.S and I thought it was an outstanding achievement and that we should go on to the International Awards level. The people who made the Reserve Project happen were Mrs Helen Crowley, Mrs Janine Anderson and all the high school students as well as the Principal Mrs Pauline Wray.

The reserve project is a great idea to get the students in touch with nature and its beauty by placing camera traps around in the bush and then collecting the cameras after a month to collect the photos and videos from them. Therefore we are able to track the movement of native and feral animals.

It also shows students, staff, parents and even our country what animals are actually in our excellent reserve, there are great pictures of kangaroos, echidnas, joeys, hawks, eagles, bilbies, ducks, and we hope we can catch a glimpse of the rare, long tailed dunnart - some photos taken at night and some in the day. There is even a photo of a hawk looking right into the camera.. Unfortunately there are also cats, foxes, mice and rabbits preying on our native species.

As a student I am proud to be a part of something so amazing and something so great for the environment and I am delighted to see that students, teachers and parents are as happy to be doing this as I am.
